Chapter 23
The woman was on the shorter side, with broad shoulders and hips, at least compared to most of the others Tanisha had seen in DeDust Three. She was pretty, with a smattering of freckles across her nose that spilled over onto cheeks that were red with a hint of a lingering sunburn. Her hair was a reddish auburn, cropped close to her head. But what struck Tanisha most of all was her wide, dark eyes, which were sparkling as she stared. As if she could see through Tanisha to the truths that lurked beneath.
âI mean...â She blinked and her dark eyes flickered down to the visible parts of Tanishaâs chair.
Tanisha managed not to wince. This was exactly what she hadnât wanted.
âI mean, of course you are. With the, um. Yeah.â The woman cleared her throat uncomfortably, and reached out to offer her hand. She smiled a wide, warm smile. âSorry. Itâs just⦠Well, Iâm Millie. Itâs an honor to meet you. I didnât think anyone in the top ten had ended up here. I thought theyâd all gone their own way, or that Otekah didnât want to grab them for fear theyâd actually break out and open the way for the rest of us.â
âYeah, Iâm sorry I havenât done it yet.â Tanisha smiled, and the genuine reaction felt awkward on her face. It was impossible not to smile back at Millie. âIn my defense, I did I only get here a week and a half ago. Iâm still working on some of the details.â She waved a hand through the air. âAny day now, though.â
Millie laughed, and the sound caught in Tanishaâs ears. It was a goofy, throaty laugh. And endlessly endearing.
âWell, Iâve been here for about six weeks. So youâre probably ahead of me on that count.â Millie smiled back at Tanisha, the corners of her eyes crinkling. âBut anyway. You might know me as Tails. You know, like the little orange guy? I know Iâve never been in your league, butââ
âTails?â Tanisha asked before Millie could continue. Her eyebrows raised sharply on their own accord. âOf course. Everyone knows Tails. Youâre⦠Well, kind of a pillar of the community. Like, the game wouldnât be what it is without you. I know of at least a dozen people who refuse to interface with the stuff in a new patch until they see your guide posted on it.â
Millie swelled with pride, her back straightening. It was well-deserved, too. Tails was a fixture of the community, having joined a few weeks after the gameâs launch. Sheâd never been really competitive on the leaderboards, but focused a lot of her attention on producing guides for new players on every aspect of the game. A lot of work went into the guides, and theyâd become such a staple for new players that the Eris server had a bot that would post the guides in response to a lot of the more common questions.
âWell, I couldnât put those guides up now,â she said, her voice deflating a little.
